SACS visit a success

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Months of preparation for an on-site visit from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges culminated today in a positive review for Georgia Regents University ─ found to be compliant with all areas of the regional accrediting body’s selected 39 Principles of Accreditation.

“This is a great day for Georgia Regents University,” said GRU President Ricardo Azziz. “I am grateful to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges for its endorsement of our university and to all the faculty, staff, students and alumni who have worked to get us to this point.”

Mark Smith, Vice President of SACSCOC, and Carol Garrison, Chair of the SACSCOC peer review committee, commended GRU officials on the university’s progress and a continued focus on students since consolidating in January.

“The findings of this site visit committee are proof that there are a growing number of opportunities for students at GRU,” Garrison said. “Of all the institutions of higher education in the nation, GRU is clearly one to watch.”

“The hard work that led up to this visit is truly exceptional,” Smith added. “I have been conducting site reviews since the 1980s and a visit that concludes without recommendations is truly a rarity.”

The SACSCOC peer review committee will now report their findings to the accrediting body’s Board of Trustees. An official report is expected in December.
