AUGUSTA, Ga. – Dr. Saundra “Sandy” Turner, Assistant Dean for Community Partnerships in the College of Nursing at Georgia Regents University, has been named CSRA Nurse of the Year by the CSRA Chapter of the Georgia Nurses Association.
Turner received the award this month during the 2013 Nursing Showcase hosted by the CSRA Chapter of the Georgia Nurses Association.
“Dr. Turner is one of those remarkable nurses who excels as nurse practitioner, educator, and certainly strong and committed leader in professional organizations and innovative international models,” said Dr. Lucy Marion, Dean of the College of Nursing. “She serves as a magnet to students, patients, and colleagues. We have been honored to have her talents and energy in the College of Nursing.”
Turner works as a Professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing, where she was Chair for many years. She also serves as Director of all Nurse Practitioner programs and holds academic appointments in Medical College of Georgia’s Department of Family Medicine and the College of Graduate Studies. After 26 years with the College of Nursing, Turner will retire in June as Professor Emeritus. She was recently honored as the 2013 Outstanding Faculty of the Year for the College of Nursing.
A pioneer in the nursing profession, Turner was the first coordinator of the MCG Family Nurse Practitioner program when it began in 1995. She was also a member of the team that developed the Doctor of Nursing Practice program, the first program of its kind in Georgia and only the tenth in the nation, and became the college’s first DNP Program Director in 2005.
In 2000, Turner started a free clinic in conjunction with the College of Nursing and MCG Department of Family Medicine that operates one day a week. In 2008, she was appointed as the inaugural Assistant Dean of Community Partnerships for the College of Nursing. Turner has served on multiple committees across campus, the Board of Directors of the National Association of Free Clinics, and the quality assurance committee of the National Nursing Centers Consortium. She is also a regional representative of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
At the 2013 Nursing Showcase, other nurses from across the region were honored, including the College of Nursing Spirit of Nursing Award winners, Dr. Jean Pawl, Assistant Professor and ASU-BSN Program (Teach-out) Director, and Rebecca Rule, Assistant Professor and Interim GRU-BSN Program Director.
