MCG faculty honored at April 29 event

Dr. Jack C. Yu, Milford B. Hatcher Professor and Chief of the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University, is the college’s 2013 Outstanding Faculty Award recipient.

Yu, who also directs the Craniofacial Center at Children’s Hospital of Georgia, was cited by nominees as an energetic, passionate, committed faculty member who excels as a surgeon, educator, researcher, and leader. He was among those honored during the annual MCG Faculty Awards Ceremony April 29.  His recent contributions include co-chairing the MCG Faculty Forward Task Force and Strategic Planning Committee. He has served on the medical school’s Admissions Committee since 2001.

A craniofacial surgeon, Yu is a member of the Fellowship Grant Committee of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and a mentor for junior surgery faculty for the Division of Education and Committee on Women’s Issues of the American College of Surgeons and Association for Women Surgeons.  He is a member of the Strategic Planning Committee of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and Chairman of Mathematics Awareness for Georgia’s Academic Council for Mathematical Sciences

Dr. Ronald W. Lewis, Professor of Graduate Studies, Physician Assistant, Physiology and Surgery who is completing a two-year term as President of the MCG Faculty Senate, received the college’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

MCG’s Institutional Service Award went to Dr. David B. Flannery, Professor and Vice Chairman, Department of Pediatrics and Chief, Section of Genetics. The Outstanding Young Basic Science Faculty Award went to Dr. Ganesan Ramesh, Associate Professor, Vascular Biology Center. The Outstanding Young Clinical Science Faculty Award went to Dr. Farrukh T. Awan, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine and Director of Marketing and Outreach for the GRU Cancer Center.  Patient Care Awards went to Dr. Elizabeth A. Sekul, Associate Professor, Department of Neurology, and Dr. Amy S. House, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Switzer, Associate Professor, Department of Neurology, received the college’s Clinical Science Research Award. Dr. Betty S. Pace, who holds the Francis J. Tedesco, MD Distinguished Chair and Interim Chief of the Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Pediatrics, received the Basic Science Research Award.

Dr. Valera L. Hudson, Professor, Chief of the Section of Pediatric Pulmonology and Pediatric Pulmonary Diagnostics and Director of the Pediatrics Residency Program, received the Clinical Science Teaching Award.  Dr. John F. Fisher, Professor, Department of Medicine, received the Basic Science Teaching Award.

The Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award went to Dr. Timothy Richard Kinsey Jr., a pediatrician in Waynesboro, Ga. Fifth-year general surgery resident Dr. David M. Hardy, an MCG graduate, received the Resident of the Year Award.

The Department of Neurology, led by Dr. David Hess, received the Outstanding Clinical Science Teaching Award from the Class of 2013 and the Department of Pathology, led by Dr. Amyn Rojiani, received the Outstanding Basic Science Teaching Award from the Class of 2015.

Educator of the Year Awards from MCG students were presented to:

  • Dr. Howard J. Cohen, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, by the GRU/UGA Medical Partnership Class of 2015
  • Dr. Vadivel Ganapathy, Chairman, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, by the Class of 2016
  • Dr. Clive A. Slaughter, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, by the GRU/UGA Medical Partnership campus Class of 2016.

Sykes-Brown, Director, Diversity Support Services, Office of Diversity Affairs, 1997-2012; Dr. Roger A. Vega, Chief, Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, 2001-12; Dr. John D. Catravas, Professor, Vascular Biology Center,1981-2012; Dr. Adarsh Gulati, Associate Professor, Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy,1984-2012; Dr. Dale W. Sickles, Vice Chairman and Professor, Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy,1978-2012; Dr. Dennis R. Ownby, Chief, Section of Allergy-Immunology and Rheumatology and Professor, Department of Pediatrics, 1998-2013; Dr. Anthony L. Pearson-Shaver, Chief, Section of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine,1986-2013; Dr. Sally S. Atherton, Chairwoman, Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy, 2000-13; and Dr. Stevin A. Dubin, Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, 1986-2013.

Additionally, the MCG Faculty Senate Executive Committee honored Dr. Peter F. Buckley, MCG Dean, for his dedication and leadership.
