Hefner to step down as CEO, EVP at GRU|GRHealth

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Effective June 30, David S. Hefner will step down as CEO of Georgia Regents Medical Center and Medical Associates, and Executive Vice President of Clinical Affairs for Georgia Regents University to pursue opportunities outside of the Augusta area, but will continue to work in a strategic capacity on behalf of GRHealth.  The university and health system remain committed to the continued development of strategic initiatives already underway.

Hefner was instrumental in leading the transformation of the clinical enterprise into an integrated, world-class health system. With a focus on patient care quality and safety innovations, he fostered cross-collaborations and partnerships in research, education, and patient care.

He spearheaded several major enterprise initiatives including the signing of a 15-year, $300 million alliance with Royal Philips to improve outcomes and deliver more effective, cost-efficient health care; the transfer and incorporation of Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehabilitation & Specialty Hospitals; the pursuit of a Certificate of Need to build a 21st-century community teaching hospital in Columbia County; and the launch of GRAChIE, an electronic health information exchange created in partnership with the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

Hefner joined the leadership team in 2011 as Executive Vice President of Clinical Affairs for what was then MCG Health System, Inc.

He previously served as Senior Advisor of the Association of American Medical Colleges in Washington, D.C. Prior to that, he was President of the University of Chicago Medical Center for three years, and Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer for Penn State’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for four years. He has more than 30 years of operating and consulting experience in progressively responsible health care positions.

Hefner has taught numerous health care skill-building and leadership courses, is the author or co-author of more than 17 articles and books, and has made more than 50 presentations at top-tier health industry meetings.

Dr. Peter F. Buckley, Chair of the Georgia Regents Medical Associates Board of Trustees, member of the Georgia Regents Health System Board of Directors, and Dean of the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University, will serve as interim CEO of the Georgia Regents Medical Center and the Georgia Regents Medical Associates, and interim Executive Vice President of Clinical Affairs for Georgia Regents University. A national search will commence immediately for a permanent replacement.
