GRU bids farewell to longtime security director

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Scotty Smith, Director of Safety and Security at Georgia Regents Medical Center. Command Sergeant Major (Ret) Scotty Ray Smith entered into rest Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, George Harper and Dorothy Richardson Smith, and a brother, Joe Lee Smith. He is survived by his wife Betty Sherrer Smith; two sons, Thomas Darryl Smith, Lubbock, Texas, and Dallas Richardson (Melissa) Smith, Martinez; and a granddaughter, Emelia Noel Smith; nephew, Jason Landry (Samantha) Smith, Mililani, Hawaii; and a great-niece, Chloe Smith.

Scotty retired from the U.S. Army with 32 years of service, but continued his support of the armed services by serving with the Wounded Warriors Project. He joined the Safety and Security team in April 2000.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Columbia Road Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Westover Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, 4115 Columbia Road, Martinez, Georgia 30907, or to the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital – Children’s Hospital of Georgia – 1446 Harper St. BT-1844, Augusta, Georgia 30912.

Scotty helped provide a safe environment at GRHealth for patients, families, and staff.  May we bring comfort to his family during this time of sorrow.
